When Janet Owings was growing up, her mother was a woman ahead of her time in her insistence on packing lunch boxes full of locally grown organic produce and simple foods. In fact, a teacher once referred to Janet and her siblings as “persnickety” because of their routinely healthy lunches. The label stuck and the family became known as the “snikiddy kids”—a shortened version of persnickety that came in handy when Janet and her daughter Mary founded a food company committed to using high quality simple ingredients.
